Chickens: The Down and Dirty of Keeping a Small Laying Flock in Interior AK

Low-tech, low-cost  but healthy and humane methods for keeping a small laying flock for family fun (and eggs too!)

Mara is the Community Development Agent for the Cooperative Extension Service working primarily in remote rural Alaska.  She has raised and maintained a home-laying flock for over 8 years in Fairbanks, with many hens living well into their dotage of 10 years (due to her complete inability to cull her chickens).

Steve Brown is the Mat-Su/Copper River District Agriculture for UAF. He started raising poultry as an 8 year-old 4-H member. He holds the high altitude "mountaineering with a chicken" record having carried a live Rhode Island red hen to the summit of Pikes Peak.
