GML: Capitalizing on Alaska's Global Leadership in Microgrid Expertise

Keynote Speaker:
Gwen Holdmann
Director
UAF Alaska Center for Energy & Power

Alaska is a global leader in microgrids, with nearly 12% of the world's installed systems that incorporate renewable generation. In Alaska, most microgrids are the stand alone electric distribution systems serving villages in roadless areas of the state. However, even our Railbelt electric grid is technically a microgrid since it is not connected to Canada or the lower-48 states. As a result, there are over 100 small businesses and non-profits with specialized expertise in microgrid design, many of whom are already applying their expertise outside the state. How can we do a better job of capitalizing on this leadership position in a global market expected to grow 4-fold to $40B a year in the next decade?
