Japanese Cinema Night

The UAF Japanese Studies Program welcomes you to an evening of film, culture, and connection at Japanese Cinema Night! Enjoy two incredible Japanese films (with English subtitles) on the big screen—free of charge!

The First Gentleman (2021)
When Hiyori, a quiet birdwatcher, returns from a trip to find his wife has become Japan’s first female prime minister, his life takes an unexpected turn. Suddenly thrust into the national spotlight as the country’s “first gentleman,” he must find his footing in a world he never imagined. A charming political comedy based on the novel by Maha Harada.

Oshin (2013)
Set in the Meiji era, Oshin tells the powerful story of a young girl sent to work for a wealthy family to help support her own. Despite hardship, Oshin endures with quiet strength and resilience. Inspired by a beloved Japanese drama and the real-life story behind the Yaohan supermarket empire, this moving film explores themes of survival, perseverance, and hope.
